Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival 2019: All you need to know about the 10-day event – Edinburgh Live

Edinburgh’s annual Jazz and Blues Festival has kicked off in the capital, allowing fans of the genre to opportunity to indulge in their favourite music.

The ten day event, which started on Friday and runs until Sunday 21 July, also allows new fans to experience live jazz and blues music they wouldn’t normally hear elsewhere.

Councillor Jason Rust, who is the Chair of EJABF said: “The current jazz and blues scene is buzzing with energy and excitement so whether you want to immerse yourself for the 10 days or check out the music for the very first time, we’re sure that you’ll find music and venues to inspire and thrill you.

“The musical menu includes New Orleans jazz of the 20s and Mississippi delta blues to the freshest sounds from New York, London, and Glasgow.”

Some of the big names returning to the festival this year are Jools Holland, Davina And The Vagabonds, Hamish McGregor, Rumba de Bodas, Red Stripe Band, Soweto Kinch, New Orleans Swamp Donkeys, Tim Elliot, and many more regulars.

There are also some new guests coming for the first time, and organisers are sure you will be dancing away to their cool tunes. Melvin Taylor, Papa Chubby, Sons of Kemet, Zac Harmon, and Jamison Ross are just some of the new names on the line up.

Their official website states: “Edinburgh Jazz Festival was set up in 1978 by banjo-player and guitarist, Mike Hart. Mike’s initial focus was on traditional jazz and a host of events taking place for free admission in pubs. By the mid-80’s the Festival had added ticketed events, and had broadened its musical policy to encompass swing and mainstream jazz and occasionally some more modern groups.

“From the Festival’s commencement the artistic policy has been to concentrate on musical excellence (rather than the “star system”) and to champion spontaneous creativity: music making on the spot in Edinburgh.

“These virtues have been developed in the 21st Century with the production of a wide range of new music, the establishment of the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra, and an on-going commitment to supporting Scottish musicians to realise creative ideas, and to link with international musicians.

“Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival has also grown its world outlook, presenting high quality musicians from all over the world.”
