Show Pick by John Alcala, Anthony Pidgeon
A staple of this time of year, it’s exciting to see the 17th annual affair book a lineup as expansive as the wonderfully malleable concept of jazz. There’s recognition of those who have stood the test of time and continue to make vital work, like saxophonists Archie Shepp, Branford Marsalis and David Sanborn; drummers Stanton Moore and Mel Brown; pianist Kenny Barron sharing the stage with keyboardist John Medeski; and guitar greats Larry Carlton and Stanley Jordan together. Yet there’s a concerted effort to highlight the next wave of artistry, hopefully bringing younger fans into the fold. Ghost-Note, with its Snarky Puppy pedigree, and the powerful vocalist Liv Warfield share a bill; Mark Guiliana brings his electronic band; the Kendrick-collabing Terrace Martin is joined by Portland horn player Max Ribner and gospel singer Saeeda Wright; and bass maestro Thundercat rocks the Portland Art Museum with locals Brown Calculus opening, followed by a late-night Jack London jam with Samuel E-M & The Joyful Noise. Prices and venues vary depending on show.
