MOSCOW, Idaho — Feb. 20, 2020 — About 5,000 students, educators, parents and jazz lovers will descend into Moscow on Feb. 28-29 for the 53rd Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho.
Students will partake in two days of competition, culminating in evening concerts with some of today’s top jazz performers. Schools from throughout Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana and British Columbia, Canada will attend.
“We are extremely excited for the 2020 festival,” said Manager Josh Skinner. “Friday and Saturday will be packed with over 400 student performances, more than 60 workshops, and afternoon and evening concerts that will provide an opportunity for everyone.”
Workshops, which are free and open to the public, will cover a range of topics on performance, the history of jazz, dance, music business and career exploration. Two new workshops feature former Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli and social media influencer Jason Heath. Tickets are still available for the evening concerts, which will feature the top soloists competing for a scholarship to U of I courtesy of Avista, as well as current jazz icons Joshua Redman and Vertical Voices and all 16 members of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. This will be the first time in more than 19 years that the entire band will attend.
“The concerts on Friday and Saturday are going to be unique and very entertaining,” Skinner said. “Those in attendance will feel the energy and see and hear the talent that these world-renown artists bring to the Kibbie Dome. They are two shows that you will not want to miss.”
Tickets range from $15 – $45 and are available from the U of I Ticket Office at 1-88-88-UIDAHO or govandals.com/tickets. In the interest of enhanced safety, a clear bag policy has been put into effect for all events in the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center, including this year’s festival.
