Cameron University Jazz Festival to present trumpeter/composer Mike Steinel and debut of Aggie Jazz Academy high school ensemble – Duncan Banner


The Cameron University Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts will present the 2020 Jazz Festival with special guest artist Mike Steinel on Tuesday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. The concert will also mark the debut performance of the Aggie Jazz Academy, which is composed of area high school students. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens/military/K-12 students. Admission is free to CU students, faculty and staff with CU ID.

The Aggie Jazz Academy, featuring area high school musicians, will make its debut with feature standards “Cute” by Neal Hefti, Fats Waller’s classic “Ain’t Misbehivin’,” and Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s “Take the A Train.”

Steinel is a jazz trumpeter, pianist, composer and arranger. An internationally recognized jazz educator, he authored the highly acclaimed “Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble” and “Building a Jazz Vocabulary.” He has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and in Europe.

High school students from Elgin, Lawton High School, MacArthur High School, Cache High School, Duncan High School and Eisenhower High School, as well as a home-schooled student, comprise the Aggie Jazz Academy.
