Shrimporee in Aransas Pass has been canceled for 2020 as has the annual Texas Jazz Fest. Shrimporee, which is held in Aransas Pass, was set for July 17-19. The Texas Jazz Festival is normally held the third weekend in October. The two join Texas SandFest, Wings Over South Texas, and many other major local events that have had to cancel due to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns for spreading the novel coronavirus now at pandemic levels.
Shrimporee in Aransas Pass
The 72nd annual Shrimporee will have to wait until next year to put on its multi-day carnival and event of parades, dog shows, eating contests, live music, and food, food, food.
“We understand the gravity of this situation for all that participate and invest annually in the Shrimporee, however the safety of our attendees and participants comes first,” reads the festival’s website. “The Aransas Pass Chamber of Commerce looks forward to the opportunities that 2021 may bring.”
Texas Jazz Fest in Corpus Christi
Although not scheduled until October, the Texas Jazz Festival Society decided to cancel this year’s festival, due to be its 60th.
“We are already planning next year’s festival and will continue to update the website as next year’s festival takes shape,” reads the website. “Thank you for your continued patronage over the years. We are living in unprecedented times and know that this too will pass.”
Shrimporee and the Texas Jazz Fest join the Texas SandFest in canceling events. SandFest, held on the beach in Port Aransas each April, originally moved the event to the first weekend in October. It recently canceled the event, setting April 23-25, 2021, as the date for the next SandFest.
Buc Days also moved its event from May to November 19-29. So far, no word on whether this 83-year-old tradition will actually happen this year. Buc Days held a virtual event for several days in April while stay-at-home orders were in place in Nueces County.
