Celebrated Assamese playback singer Papon, also known as Angaraag Mahanta, tuned into the India Today e-Mind Rocks 2020, by talking about the upside of the lockdown. Speaking from his home, Papon said he found the time he spends with his family very special. “We do all the things together we couldn’t have done otherwise, which we hadn’t the time for before.” In a way the lockdown has promoted creativity for artists. “It’s a time where we have opened up to our own ideas and others’ ideas, too.”
Papon, a youth icon, was asked what advice he has for the young during the pandemic. He replied, “Truthfully, no one knows how to handle the crisis.” Going on to talk about dealing with stress in the time of Covid, he said that everyone is facing the same problems and the key is not to hold on to stress. “This is the ideal time to build up your immune system, and be fit mentally as well.”
What Papon does miss these days, is playing live on stage. “You can share the same song with people. There’s so much of good vibes and energy then.” What the singer misses most of all are the mountains.
“The day I can move, I will run to the mountains. I need to go to the forest. That’s my medicine, my oxygen, which keeps me sane. More than music, I need the forest.” Papon interspersed the session with several songs, such as an Assamese song he created, Paar Hobo Aei Xomoy, which translates to ‘this time shall too pass.’
