MUNCIE — A free outdoor concert by the Big Band Jazz Players of America’s Hometown Band will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at Hazelwood Christian Church, 1400 W. University Ave.

“Saxophone Afternoon” is the 2019 edition of the AHB Big Band concert series that  celebrates an outstanding Hometown Music Hero each year. This year’s featured performer is alto saxophone artist LaMont Webb, a Ball State music school alumnus, previous member of the AHB concert and jazz bands, and a veteran of many jazz performance groups. He now participates full-time in the Jazz Studies program at Indiana University.

AHB assistant musical directors Will Frazier and Phil Cooley will lead the band for a program includeing works by Big Band greats such as Billy Strayhorn and Sammy Nestico. Admission is free, and those attending are encouraged to take lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

Industry Neighborhood plans picnic

MUNCIE — The Industry Neighborhood Association will have a “Picnic in the Park” 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Heekin Park Cabin 3.

The event will include free food, music and activities for adults and children. Those attending are invited to take their own chairs.

Performances @ Cornerstone set for October

MUNCIE — Cornerstone Center for the Arts — in partnership with Ball State University’s School of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance and The Harmony Players — will continue the Performances @ Cornerstone series this October. Upcoming shows will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 and 27, and are free and open to the public.

On Oct. 13, students and faculty from the BSU Department of Theatre and Dance will explore, explain and entertain with excerpts from upcoming productions in the 2019-20 season. Through preview performances and conversations, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at the rehearsal process and a greater understanding of the collaboration required to take a production from idea to full fruition.

On Oct. 27, Ball State music students from across the country, including members of the newly formed Beneficence Woodwind Quintet, graduate ensemble in residence in the BSU School of Music, will talk about woodwind instruments and will perform accessible music for all ages.

Upcoming productions include BSU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and Cardinal Trombone Choir (Nov. 10) and The Harmony Players (Nov. 24) with more to come in 2020.
