A return to rock ‘n’ roll prominence for the Black Keys wouldn’t be complete without a night in Nashville.
The reactivated rock duo hailing from Ohio — but calling Music City home since 2010 — returned Tuesday night to Bridgestone Arena for a show in support of the band’s comeback LP, “Let’s Rock” (an album drawing its name and imagery from the 2018 execution of Tennessee death row inmate Edmund Zagorski).
A 90-minute effort from frontman-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney offered a relapse into the riff-heavy, arena-ready blues rock that the creative pair effectively produced before unplugging for a four-year hiatus.

“So many friends and family here tonight, we’re losin’ money,” Auerbach joked.
A few highlights from the “Let’s Rock” tour stop in Nashville …
The set: Auerbach and Carney featured a half-dozen cuts from the new album in Tuesday night’s 21-song set, including a wavy jam of “Eagle Birds,” the fuzzy album closer “Fire Walk With Me” and steamy lead single “Lo/Hi.”
The band gave subtle hints of its history in dealing out garage rock gusto, kicking the show as far back as 2003 and the sludgy “Thickfreakness.”
“We’re gonna do another oldie right now,” Auerbach said to introduce the track. “Back when we used to live in the basement and make records in the basement. Some basement music.”
The band graduated from the basement to the arena, pulling out buoyant cuts such as 2019’s “Go” and Grammy Award-winning 2011 number “Lonely Boy.”
And, of course, the Keys did justice to the handful of alt-radio hits — “Gold On The Ceiling,” an elastic “Howlin’ For You” and show highlight “Little Black Submarines,” among others — that could one day populate classic rock airwaves.
The stage: Black Keys run a no-frills arena operation; a show free of bombastic pyrotechnics or rehearsed antics. Backed by a trio of musicians and slick light show, Auerbach and Carney play close together at the front of the stage.
“Let’s Rock” imagery — a pair of lightning bolts and, for the encore, larger-than-life electric chair — hangs behind the band as a not-so-subtle reminder of the album title’s backstory.
The openers: Indie favorites Modest Mouse played main support, a flowing 12-song set including odd-rock fan favorites “Dashboard,” “Lampshades on Fire” and “Float On.” Nashville’s own up-and-coming power rock outfit Repeat Repeat kicked off the gig with a half-hour of zealous cuts from the band’s Carney-produced album, “Glazed.”
The “Let’s Rock” tour continues Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio.
