Kelly Green Trio Kelly Green – Piano and Voice Alex Tremblay – bass Evan Hyde – drums The Kelly Green Trio opens its debut album, Volume One, with an almost 10-minute rendition of the Jerome Kern/Johnny Mercer chestnut “I’m Old-Fashioned” that establishes the opposite premise of the lyric. Subtly reharmonizing the standard, the ensemble sounds anything but out of date, streamlining Kern’s already compressed melody without detracting from the beauty of his ingenious line. It’s a performance that sets a high bar, which Kelly mostly meets through a program full of songs from the first half of the 20th century.

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O’Farrill — leader of the “first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz” (NY Times) — was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O’Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley’s Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O’Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure.

Summer Williams, better known by her stage name SLSTRSS (abbrev. for Soulstress), is an american singer and songwriter. Before being known as SLSTRSS, Williams began as a young singer growing up in her CT community winning city and statewide vocal competitions and beauty pageants. As an older artist, Williams released two mixtapes under her real name, “Late Night Session” (2011) and “Boom Bap Soul, Vol. 1” (2013) which both received major blog and online magazine placements such as ThisIs50, The Source, Vibe and Singersroom. With those first mixtapes, Williams performed some of NYC’s biggest indie venues including B.B Kings, SOB’s and Sugar Bar. Her first EP “Hello Again” (2017), still under her real name, landed her a signed distribution deal with Black 17 and Sony RED in 2017.

It’s impossible not to hear freedom and excitement coursing through the veins of Marco Benevento’s new studio album, ‘Let It Slide.’ Produced by Leon Michels (The Arcs, Lee Fields), the record introduces a gritty, soulful edge to Benevento’s brand of high-octane keyboard wizardry — an uptempo, uplifting sound he playfully describes as “hot dance piano rock.” For all Benevento’s virtuosity on the keys though, the songs here are driven primarily by intoxicating grooves, with spare drums and minimalist basslines underpinning infectious, intentionally lo-fi vocal hooks. The resulting vibe is a timeless one, filtering elements of vintage R&B and soul through modern indie rock and pop sensibilities and peppering it with the kind of adventurous improvisation that Benevento’s come to be celebrated for worldwide.

The 1950s through the ’70s were a golden age of Italian-American male crooners—Vic Damone, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Jimmy Roselli, Sergio Franchi, Jerry Vale—who honored the Italian popular song, with all its lush melody and openhearted sentiment. But for Vanessa Ricci, who grew up in a Neopolitan-descended, Italian-American family in Thornwood, New York, the queen of that repertoire was Connie Francis. “She was always my idol. She has a cry in her voice that is characteristic of Neopolitan singers; you can feel the emotion and authenticity.” The same can be said of Vanessa’s voice—a sweet-and-sour, impeccably musical contralto that throbs with feeling. Vanessa has spent years singing pop-jazz standards; she also earned a coveted Helen Hayes Award for her portrayal of Christine in a New York-area production of Phantom of the Opera. But on this, her first album, she delves into the Italian songs of her childhood—the ones she heard each day blasting from her family’s basement apartment, where her beloved grandfather lived. Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O’Farrill — leader of the “first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz” (NY Times) — was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O’Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley’s Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O’Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin Jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure.
