Invisible Familiars / Tom & Lee Double Bill – Luntico No
January 22, 2020 – Brooklyn

INVISIBLE FAMILIARSNew York City’s music community is a tight knit bunch, so if you don’t already know Invisible Familiars, there’s a good chance that you’ve seen the man behind the band playing on a number of stages here, or in any town that you may call home. A musician’s musician, Jared Samuel has long earned his living recording and performing live with countless artists we respect and love — folks like Cibo Matto, the Ghost of the Saber Tooth Tiger, Martha Wainwright, and Sharon Jones, to name a few. Yet even more impressive than his talents as a multi-instrumentalist is his songwriting, a pursuit that he’s put his full focus on as Invisible Familiars.Tom & Lee is Levon Henry on saxophones and Tom Csatari on guitar. These two young musicians are each making serious waves in New York City and beyond. We are thrilled to have them join forces here in a spirited duo that splits the difference between the folk and jazz genres, exploring the nooks of old American songs as well as new explorative original songs inspired by the likes of Mississippi John Hurt, Bob Dylan, Thelonious Monk, John Fahey and Duke Ellington all the while maintaining a spirit of risk and adventure.

Jarien Jamanila Quartet Late Show – Cafe Bohemia
January 24, 2020 – New York

I like to write melodies that I think will be memorable, and I like to write in a swing style. When I hear Charlie Parker, Johnny Hodges, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, I’d like to have my own voice in that style of writing. I try to write more, but I like to write when it comes naturally. I prefer when melodies or chord changes come to me without there being an assignment at school: I like to write with honesty. That’s not to say you can’t do that with school, but I find that I can’t force myself to be inspired if I’m told to write, because I like to write when it’s best for me. People say my style is a bit different, my melodies can be quirky. My friends would say that it’s genuine, it’s not unlike me to write in that way.” Jazz Speaks

Teddy was exposed to a wider variety of music than most “country boys”. In high school and over the next few years he was in several bands, genres ranging from 80’s hair metal, funk, modern metalcore, soul, and country alternative bands. These experiences make Teddy who he is as an artist. In March of 2019, Teddy went on his first US tour as a hip-hop artist with his best friend Addy Maxwell, which he describes as freeing experience, as he was able to continue to expand into uncharted territory. With this in mind, Teddy began to explore integrating the various genres he loved: metal, pop-punk, soul/funk, country, gospel, r&b, and show-tunes, into one genre that is Teddy Swims. Teddy is the accumulation of past projects. Swims stands for: someone who isn’t me sometimes, a reference to Teddy’s struggle to integrate the different parts of himself. For Teddy, the goal is to break barriers and bring people together. About the project, Teddy says, “… (read more)
