Son of the late, great composer Chico O’Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. In his Dizzy’s Club headlining premiere, vocalist and flutist Jeremy Bosch will perform the music of salsa and bolero pioneer Cheo Feliciano. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Bosch attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship at age 17, and he has since performed all over the world as a bandleader and in groups like the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Sergio George and the Salsa Giants. Jazz at Lincoln Center audiences might also recognize him from his role in The Carlos Henriquez Project in The Appel Room. It’s hard not to love live salsa music, and tonight you can enjoy the legacy of the legendary Cheo Feliciano, who has influenced current greats like Rubén Blades, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and Jerry Rivas.

When he was 20 he started to play piano and decided to quit his job and move to Tokyo to pursue his dream of becoming a jazz pianist. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Joe Alterman studied music at New York University, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Jazz Piano Performance. In addition to performances with Houston Person, Les McCann and his own trio, among others, Alterman has performed at many world renowned venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland and New York’s Blue Note, where Alterman has opened, many times, for Ramsey Lewis. Only 29 years old, Alterman has released four critically-acclaimed albums, his most recent being 2017’s “Comin’ Home To You”. He was profiled three times by iconic journalist Nat Hentoff and was the subject of Hentoff’s very last piece on music in March 2016. Williams is a gifted musician who has toured and recorded with artists including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, the World Saxophone Quartet, Branford Marsalis, Josh Evans, Stanley Cowell, Grassella Oliphant, and Oliver Lake. I have had the honor to talk with Marc Jacoby (guitar), Cliff Mays (guitar) and Jim Weingast (drums) about what the Grateful-Blue Roadhouse Orchestra brings to the music of the Grateful Dead. Although they will be playing exclusively Grateful Dead tunes, they do not want to be seen exclusively as a “cover band”. Marc commented: “I have always played Grateful Dead music, as long as I have been playing guitar. I just like the sound of the music”. “We all like to share the music”. Cliff adds:” The Grateful Dead songbook was very unusual. The songs had a richness not found in other bands”. “We all had different eras in which we were introduced to the band”. The band is close in “feel” to the Grateful Dead without being note for note copies. There is no “Jerry” or “Bobby” in the group. It just comes out Grateful Dead. Jim added: “It’s all about listening and responding to one another as opposed to playing a preconceived notion of what the Dead were playing”. John Brothers Piano Company is an Oakland-based instrumental quartet whose compositions oscillate between incisive part-writing and unrestrained improvisational energy. Guided by this interplay, seemingly disparate influences, from chamber music to hot jazz, are focused through emphatic lyricism. In 2011 a group of friends at UC Berkeley had recently graduated and were contemplating job options. Finding that by hauling their spinet piano to nearby subway stations and busking together they could make enough to survive in the Bay Area, the path forward was clear. After the first few haphazard street shows and a generous write-up in the San Francisco Chronicle, the newly-formed John Brothers Piano Company began receiving opportunities to bring their wild sound in off the street.

The band, consisting of American bass player Gary Wang, German drummer Roland Schneider and Israeli pianist-composer Fort, has played New York jazz clubs for over two decades, gathering an extensive following in the whole metropolitan area. 9 years after their beginning, they spread apart: Roland moved to Berlin and Anat to Tel-Aviv. You have to be totally comfortable wherever,” Carter says. “I feel that music equals life, that’s the way my teacher always taught me. You just can’t go through life and experience it fully with a set of blinders on. I think there’s tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of music and influences.” In many ways, weaving together divergent impulses is at the heart of Carter’s music. Like the late tenor sax titan Ben Webster, he’s given to furious, high-velocity solos, but is just as likely to wax sentimental, using his big, bruising tone to tenderly caress a comely melody. In 2000, he released two albums simultaneously that amounted to an anti-manifesto, a proclamation that everything is fair game. Writing in The New York Times (4.23.2015), Nate Chinen called Brian Blade “one of the most unaffectedly charismatic musicians in jazz.” We couldn’t agree more, and now the Jazz Standard is proud to present this gifted drummer’s latest project, Life Cycles. Along with such longtime members of the Brian Blade Fellowship as pianist Jon Cowherd and saxophonist Myron Walden, the new aggregation includes vocalist/vibraphonist Monte Croft; he first recorded as a leader circa 1989 (two albums on Columbia) and went on to work with the groups of Branford Marsalis and James Spaulding, in addition to his own outfits. As for Shreveport, Louisiana native Brian Blade, from 1988 through 1993 he studied and played with many of the New Orleans masters, including Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Germaine Bazzle, and Alvin “Red” Tyler. A member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet since 2000, Brian Blade also has worked with Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, and Bob Dylan. “[His] rich tapestry of cymbal variations, swelling snare–rolls and asymmetrical accents, coupled with an unfaltering heartbeat of a pulse, marks out an unusually emotional drummer.”

Ava has been invited to sit in with some of Buffalo and Rochester’s elite musicians, but this will be her first featured performance. Stu Weissman has been a mainstay on the local music seen as a guitarist, band leader, former Adjunct instructor of Guitar at Buff State, and private teacher to many well known local instrumentalists. He nurtured the musical development of his sons Avery and Ethan who have established their own reputations. His career spans a 1974 engagement with the Buffalo Philharmonic and Ethel Merman on opening night at Art Park to backing up Grammy winning Tom Hambridge at the 2018 Silo City Blues Festival, and performs weekly at “The Sportsmens”. Formed in September of 2013 they quickly became one of the top acts in their native Tampa Bay music scene, as evidenced by their nomination for best local group in Tampa Bay and Ari for best Jazz vocalist. Their high energy live show has landed them performance slots at renowned venues such as Skippers Smokehouse, Janus Live, The Tampa Hard Rock Casino and have opened for Lake Street Dive at Vinyl Music Hall. They have also performed in New York, Cleveland, Atlanta, Asheville, New Orleans, Los Angeles and Austin. This past summer (2018) they expanded into Canada with concerts in Ottawa and Hamilton Ontario. On their way home they were honored to be guest performers at Victor Wooten’s nature camp Wooten Woods outside of Nashville Tenn. In 2019 they have broadened their reach again with a series of eight shows in Scotland.

About Tom: Tom McDermott is one of New Orleans’ premiere piano players and composers. He grew up in St. Louis, where he earned a Masters’ Degree in Music, wrote music journalism for the morning paper, and soaked up the sounds of ragtime and traditional jazz that flourished there in the 1960s and 70s. In 1984, spurred by his love of James Booker, Professor Longhair and Dr. John, he moved to New Orleans, a trip enabled by a gig at the World’s Fair. Tom is known for his eclecticism, and is just about the only New Orleans pianist to stretch from the mid-19th-century music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk to the funky New Orleans piano today. He has a great love of Brazilian music (17 trips there so far), the Beatles, European classical music, early Duke Ellington, and much more.

The Tristones is a Blues-Rock-Funk project fronted by Canadian guitarist Tristan Clark. Originally from Vancouver Island, Canada, Tristan started playing guitar at the age of 11. He completed his degree in Jazz Performance at Humber College in Toronto in 2005. In 2014, Tristan moved to New York City to further pursue his career in the music industry. Tristan also teaches guitar as adjunct faculty for New York University’s Music and Performing Arts Department. The Tristones released their debut full-length album ‘Donkey’ in Toronto in 2013. Since relocating to NYC, The Tristones features Gregory Jones on bass and Adam Jackson on drums. Gregory studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. He is active on the Jazz, RnB, Brazilian, Latin-Jazz and Gospel scenes locally and has toured extensively. Adam studied performance at The New School and has worked with world-class artists (locally and internationally) as well as in the studio.

Soulive has never made any bones about what they do best; it’s right there in their name. Since forming in 1999, the trio of guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Alan Evans and keyboardist Neal Evans has carried the torch for the soul-jazz organ trio—that venerable, funky institution pioneered by the likes of Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes in the late ’60s. Rest assured, when the Evans brothers first brought Kraz by their Woodstock studio, there was plenty of old vinyl spread out on the floor.
