All of us at Jazz Standard are delighted to welcome back five–time GRAMMY Award winner Billy Childs, a musician held in the highest esteem for his prodigious skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. In 1988, he launched his recording career as a leader with Take For Example, This…– the first of his four critically acclaimed albums for Windham Hill Jazz. For this much–anticipated engagement, Billy and band – including the exceptional vocalists Alicia Olatuja and Kate McGarry – will revisit the 2014 Sony Masterworks album Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. In his Rolling Stone review (9.9.2014), Dave DiMartino wrote: “This polished product, the work of jazz pianist Billy Childs, spotlights many of Nyro’s best songs via Childs’ creative orchestrations and the marvelous guest performers…Highly recommended.” Billy Childs’ latest album, Rebirth(Mack Avenue), marks “a return to the snaking quickfire hard–bop Childs played in the ’70s, albeit infused with all the musics he has visited so intelligently since…It’s ultra–s… (read more)

Mingus Big Band: Celebrating 10 Years at Jazz Standard – Jazz Standard
July 15, 2019 – New York

“His music aimed always at the further extension of the horizons of jazz and sometimes experimented with atonality and with a wide range of dissonant effects. Some elements offer a sharp and piquant contrast, with clearly defined folk music roots and a savage, shouting, blues–derived intensity. Not for complacent ears, Mingus’ music is the prototype of a new and vital generation of the 1960s just as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie were of the 1940s.” (Leonard Feather, The New Encyclopedia Of Jazz)

You just can’t go through life and experience it fully with a set of blinders on. I think there’s tremendous beauty in a cross-pollination of music and influences.” In many ways, weaving together divergent impulses is at the heart of Carter’s music. Like the late tenor sax titan Ben Webster, he’s given to furious, high-velocity solos, but is just as likely to wax sentimental, using his big, bruising tone to tenderly caress a comely melody. In 2000, he released two albums simultaneously that amounted to an anti-manifesto, a proclamation that everything is fair game.

July 17, 2019 – New York

Hailed in the Downbeat International Critics Poll as #1 Rising Star trombonist, a player “of vision and composure” (the NY Times), Ryan Keberle has developed a one-of-a-kind voice both on his instrument and as a composer. As one of 21stcentury jazz’s most adventurous new voices, Keberle’s music integrates his wide–ranging experiences into a highly personal vernacular — immersed in jazz tradition, drawing on world music, rock and other influences, always seeking fresh and original pathways. As a featured soloist with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Keberle collaborated with David Bowie on the latter’s 2015 single “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)”; he’s performed extensively with the lauded songwriter Sufjan Stevens, with Brazilian superstar Ivan Lins, and with the “Saturday Night Live” house band. Ryan Keberle’s flagship ensemble, Catharsis, has released five albums; the politically engaged Find The Common, Shine A Light, was praised by The Nation as “unpretentiously intelligent and profoundly moving.” Ryan Keberle – trombone, keyboards, voice Camila Meza – guitar, voice Scott Robinson – saxophones, clarinet, flute, trumpet Matt Clohesy – bass Eric Doob – drums

Grateful Bro – The Capitol Theatre
July 17, 2019 – Port Chester

I have had the honor to talk with Marc Jacoby (guitar), Cliff Mays (guitar) and Jim Weingast (drums) about what the Grateful-Blue Roadhouse Orchestra brings to the music of the Grateful Dead. Although they will be playing exclusively Grateful Dead tunes, they do not want to be seen exclusively as a “cover band”. Marc commented: “I have always played Grateful Dead music, as long as I have been playing guitar. I just like the sound of the music”. “We all like to share the music”. Cliff adds:” The Grateful Dead songbook was very unusual. The songs had a richness not found in other bands”. “We all had different eras in which we were introduced to the band”. The band is close in “feel” to the Grateful Dead without being note for note copies. There is no “Jerry” or “Bobby” in the group. It just comes out Grateful Dead. Jim added: “It’s all about listening and responding to one another as opposed to playing a preconceived notion of what the Dead were playing”. It is as it should be then, because the Dead never played note for note copies of their songs night to night. This is a band that captures the spirit of the Grateful Dead. They investigate and explore the chemistry of the Dead. Garc… (read more)

Teatro Nuovo Presents Bellini’s: La Straniera – Dizzy’s Club
July 17, 2019 – New York

Teatro Nuovo presents a semi-staged performance of Bellini’s second opera to reach America, La Straniera (The Stranger). The late Philip Gossett called La Straniera Bellini’s “most radical opera”. It is one of the most gorgeously melodic scores in all of opera, and at the same time one of the most uncompromisingly focused on psychological drama. John Brothers Piano Company – Littlefield
July 17, 2019 – Brooklyn

Ages 21+ Early jazz meets stride and swing in John Brothers Piano Company’s unrelenting energy, elegance, and humor. John Brothers Piano Company is an Oakland-based instrumental quartet whose compositions oscillate between incisive part-writing and unrestrained improvisational energy. Guided by this interplay, seemingly disparate influences, from chamber music to hot jazz, are focused through emphatic lyricism. In 2011 a group of friends at UC Berkeley had recently graduated and were contemplating job options. Finding that by hauling their spinet piano to nearby subway stations and busking together they could make enough to survive in the Bay Area, the path forward was clear. After the first few haphazard street shows and a generous write-up in the San Francisco Chronicle, the newly-formed John Brothers Piano Company began receiving opportunities to bring their wild sound in off the street.

Anat Fort Trio – Birdland Jazz Club
July 17, 2019 – New York

20 Years after their initial meeting in a rehearsal basement in the east village, the Anat Fort trio has hundreds of performances under its belt. The band, consisting of American bass player Gary Wang, German drummer Roland Schneider and Israeli pianist-composer Fort, has played New York jazz clubs for over two decades, gathering an extensive following in the whole metropolitan area. 9 years after their beginning, they spread apart: Roland moved to Berlin and Anat to Tel-Aviv. Gary is the only one who stayed in NY, but that has not stopped them from touring the US, Canada, Europe, China and Israel performing in all major venues such as Montreal jazz festival, JVC jazz festival, Blue Note, Birdland, Tel-Aviv Opera House, Israel festival, NDR in Hamburg, Duc Des Lombards in Paris, Porgy and Bess in Vienna, A-Trane in Berlin and many more. In 2010, the trio released their long-awaited first recording, And if, on the prestigious ECM Records label. The recording garnered international acclaim and was named one of the best 10 records of the year by “Slate” magazine. In 2016 they released Birdwatching on ECM Records as well. The recording, called “a subtle triumph” by the NY Times, featur… (read more)

Late Night Session: Jonathan Thomas: Harlem Renaissance: Through the Eyes of Langston Hughes – Dizzy’s Club

With pianist Jonathan Thomas, bassist Ryan Berg, drummer Bryan Carter, vocalist Karlea Lynné, and poet Cyrus Aaron.

James Carter – Blue Note
Through July 17, 2019 – New York

You have to be totally comfortable wherever,” Carter says. “I feel that music equals life, that’s the way my teacher always taught me. You just can’t go through life and experience it fully with a set of blinders on. I think there’s tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of music and influences.” In many ways, weaving together divergent impulses is at the heart of Carter’s music. On Chasin’ the Gypsy, a voluptuous, lyrical session partly inspired by the timeless collaboration between Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, he assembled a thrilling group with violinist Regina Carter and Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, for a project born out of some sound check jamming with Lubambo and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista during a tour with Kathleen Battle. The groove-laden Layin’ in the Cut, featuring James Blood Ulmer’s former rhythm section with electric… (read more)

Writing in The New York Times (4.23.2015), Nate Chinen called Brian Blade “one of the most unaffectedly charismatic musicians in jazz.” We couldn’t agree more, and now the Jazz Standard is proud to present this gifted drummer’s latest project, Life Cycles. Along with such longtime members of the Brian Blade Fellowship as pianist Jon Cowherd and saxophonist Myron Walden, the new aggregation includes vocalist/vibraphonist Monte Croft; he first recorded as a leader circa 1989 (two albums on Columbia) and went on to work with the groups of Branford Marsalis and James Spaulding, in addition to his own outfits. As for Shreveport, Louisiana native Brian Blade, from 1988 through 1993 he studied and played with many of the New Orleans masters, including Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Germaine Bazzle, and Alvin “Red” Tyler. A member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet since 2000, Brian Blade also has worked with Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, and Bob Dylan. “[His] rich tapestry of cymbal variations, swelling snare–rolls and asymmetrical accents, coupled with an unfaltering heartbeat of a pulse, marks out an unusually emotional drummer.”

Albert Castiglia W/ Special Guests – Buffalo Iron Works
July 18, 2019 – Buffalo

Masterpiece to be released by Gulf Coast Records May 24, 2019 “It may be a bit premature to crown Albert Castiglia America’s newest King of the Blues, but there’s little doubt that he at least deserves the title of heir apparent.” — Miami New Times As most artists will attest, the most unexpected circumstance can spark artistic inspiration. That’s a fact that hasn’t been lost on singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Albert Castiglia. With his latest album, the aptly named Masterpiece, he celebrates an unforeseen triumph — a connection with a daughter he never knew he had. The result is a work that’s both personal and provocative all at the same time. Castiglia calls this the most meaningful album he’s ever made. “My daughter finding me and opening up my world to an additional family, including two grandchildren, brought out the deepest material I’ve ever created,” he notes, “along with my wife, they were my muses.” Indeed, songs such as “Keep On Swinging”, “Masterpiece” and “Bring on the Rain” address the unexpected emotions that infused his psyche with the discovery of a family he never knew. “Prior to my daughter finding me, my entire adult life felt incomplete,” Ca… (read more)

Their second studio album and Anti- Records debut sees the visionary quartet drawing from ancestral mythologies and musical enlightenment to unearth the awareness of Ahomale, the album’s cosmic muse. Comprised of Carolina Oliveros’ mesmeric contralto, illuminating storytelling and fierce guacharaca rhythms, Prince of Queens’ hypnotic synth stabs and grooving bass lines, Niño Lento’s imaginative guitar licks, and Dilemastronauta’s powerful drumming, the lure and lore of Combo Chimbita comes into existence.

Y La Bamba – Le Poisson Rouge
July 18, 2019 – New York

18+ Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza’s inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band’s affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza’s artistic voice like never before. “Soy como soy,” Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba’s most unbridled offering yet.

Life Cycles: Blade, Boccato, Cowherd, Croft, Hart, Walden & Weiss – Blue Note
July 20, 2019 – New York

Bowlive Viii Featuring Soulive with Special Guest Ivan Neville – Brooklyn Bowl
July 20, 2019 – Brooklyn

Soulive has never made any bones about what they do best; it’s right there in their name. Since forming in 1999, the trio of guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Alan Evans and keyboardist Neal Evans has carried the torch for the soul-jazz organ trio—that venerable, funky institution pioneered by the likes of Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes in the late ’60s. Rest assured, when the Evans brothers first brought Kraz by their Woodstock studio, there was plenty of old vinyl spread out on the floor.

3 Night Pass (Weekend 2) – Bowlive Viii Featuring Soulive – Brooklyn Bowl

In their 13 years together, Soulive has followed the muse in the direction of hip-hop, R&B, blues and rock, collaborating with the likes of Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews, Talib Kweli, John Scofield, Derek Trucks, Maceo Parker, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, Fred Wesley, The Roots, Ivan Neville and so many others, even going so far as to record a full album of covers by The Beatles (Rubber Soulive). But, no matter how they push the limits of the organ trio, they always come back to their bread and butter: blistering solos and grooves that don’t quit. Their latest, a four-track EP entitled, SPARK, deserves a place on your record shelf right between Bo… (read more)

Myron Walden – Blue Note
Through July 20, 2019 – New York

Myron Walden is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, lauded for the rich earnestness of his sound and clarity of tone and his distinctly impassioned stage presence. Myron, who first specialized on the alto saxophone and the rarely heard bass clarinet, has added the tenor saxophone to his musical arsenal. He is a leader of an expanding number of musical projects, reflecting the varied aspects of a growing musical identity. He is an in-demand sideman, a founding member of Brian Blade’s Fellowship Band and a regular band member of the ensembles of such jazz legends as the late Ray Barretto and Freddie Hubbard. He is a prodigious composer working in a wide variety of styles and moods (his oft-recorded “Like a Flower Seeking the Sun” is but one example of an inventive spirit whose melodies have been recorded by the likes of Ravi Coltrane, Antoine Roney, Winard Harper, Vincent Herring, Carl Allen and Ray Barretto.) Yet if one aspect of Walden’s kaleidoscopic musical identity could define him, it would be a driving, restless spirit – one that drives him to widen his experience, to dig deeper into himself, to challenge himself to find that certain truth that lies at the heart of any musical e… (read more)
