“Bassist Max Johnson is one of the most prolific and versatile musician/composers in music today” (Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz). The Heroes Trio, features Jason Rigby on Saxophone, Jeff Davis on Drums, and Johnson on bass, interprets the compositions by great bass players and heroes, past and present, such as Jimmy Garrison, Charlie Haden, Mark Dresser, Charles Mingus, Dave Holland, Henry Grimes, in addition to playing original music dedicated to these masters. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear three of New York’s finest jazz musicians interpret these classic compositions in a way that is truly their own.

July 03, 2019 – New York
An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B–3 organ for over five decades, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been featured on over 70 albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of jazz, blues and R&B legends. Smith’s career took off when he joined George Benson’s group in the early ’60s; that led to Lonnie’s first album as a leader (Finger Lickin’ Good, released 1966 on Columbia), his affiliation with saxophonist Lou Donaldson, and his signing to Blue Note Records. As a leader, Lonnie Smith released such soul jazz classics as Think!,Turning Point, Move Your Hand, and Drives; post–Blue Note, he remained a consistent presence on the national jazz charts with his albums for Kudu, Groove Merchant, T.K., Scufflin’, Criss Cross and Palmetto. His unpredictable, insatiable musical taste insures that no genre is safe: The Doctor has recorded everything from covers of the Beatles, the Stylistics and the Eurythmics to tributes to Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and Beck, leading ensembles that range from his tight–knit working trio to a fifteen–piece big band. “The Doctor is in”at Jazz Standard – make your reservations now! Nancy Kelly: Remembering Mark Murphy – Birdland Jazz Club
July 04, 2019 – New York
Nancy Kelly is an exceptionally gifted jazz singer in a league of her own.The lady was “Born to Swing”, and she means business. Her live performances are legendary. She has earned many awards and enlisted fans from around the globe. In a market place where wispy voices and shallow emotions abound, Ms. Kelly is a breath of fresh air…or should we say, smoky air; she takes us back to the time when jazz – and that includes vocal jazz — was an authentic expression of real emotion.

The Felice Brothers – The Capitol Theatre
July 05, 2019 – Port Chester
The Felice Brothers’ album, Life in the Dark, out on Yep Roc, is classic American music. At once plainspoken and deeply literate, the band’s latest features nine new songs that capture the hopes and fears, the yearning and resignation, of a rootless, restless nation at a time of change. Life in the Dark also coincides with The Felice Brothers’ 10th anniversary as a band. Hailed by the AV Club for a sound at once “timeless, yet tossed-off,” they’ve released plenty of music over the past decade, often on their own without a record label, but the new album is the fullest realization yet of the band’s DIY tendencies. Self-produced by the musicians and engineered by James Felice (who also contributed accordion, keyboards and vocals), the Felice Brothers made Life in the Dark themselves in a garage on a farm in upstate New York, observed only by audience of poultry. “The recording is definitely rough around the edges and cheap,” James Felice says, laughing. “It was liberating and really cool to do. It allowed us to untether ourselves from anything and just make music.” Because of makeshift studio set-up, the music they made was necessarily stripped down, emphasizing acoustic instrumen… (read more)

The Justice Collective – The Groove
July 06, 2019 – New York
The Justice Collective is a musical project created by Boyce upon moving to New York City. This band, though an ever-shifting experiment, is consistently focused on alluding to an educated understanding of improvising and jazz harmony while occupying a less swing-focused and more mainstream rhythmic palette. The group thrives on the level of friendship shared between members, even if the lineup isn’t the same every time, there are no enemies and there is no negative energy occupying the musical space, instead all energy is focused on nurturing each other’s creativity and unique talents to create a sum total sound that reflects every musician’s contribution to the group. There is no mystical or mysterious energy surrounding the group, these are simply just talented human beings who enjoy each other’s company and the company of those who listen. Humans make this music, so we act like humans. The group is set to record in 2019 and will make frequent appearances in New York City in the coming months.
