Bill Charlap Trio – Village Vanguard
September 08, 2019 – New York
As a unit, this must be one of the best piano trios ever, and certainly as instantly recognisable as any of its great predecessors. Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (famously unrelated), the total effect is just perfect. As always, Charlap’s playing provides convincing proof that it is still possible to create fresh but pertinent treatments of well-known standard songs.

September 08, 2019 – New York
Brian Newman teams up with the New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra for an evening of big band sounds with some of best musicians New York City offers. Performing originals, jazz standards and classics from the Great American Songbook, this 18-piece band will take you for a ride through an eclectic mix of composers and sounds from the past and present and future of jazz music Jazz isn’t what it used to be, but for trumpeter and vocalist Brian Newman, that’s entirely the point. American trumpet legends like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Lee Morgan are already a part of music history. They’re revered and loved in the way they should be. As Newman explains, learning from them is paramount, but replicating them is pointless. “I don’t want to do what’s already been done,” he says. “I love Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington –guys like that are bringing jazz to another level but still referencing the tradition. Jazz shouldn’t be placed in a glass jar.” Newman is here to bust the art form out of its constraints, and it’s a destiny he knew he had since his childhood. Growing up in Cleveland, the 12-year-old Newman envisioned his future as a New York City jazz musician when Louie Bellson (dr… (read more)

A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicings, a romantic spirit, and a consistent predisposition, like Alexander, accurately states, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” In the course of any given performance, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae. Documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing), the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and in 2018 Th… (read more)

The Green – Brooklyn Bowl
September 08, 2019 – Brooklyn
Since forming on O’ahu, Hawai’i, in 2009, The Green has become one of the most successful and beloved bands in the reggae genre. During their relatively short career, the band has been awarded a Best Reggae Album nod from iTunes (2010, for their self-titled debut), four coveted Na Hoku Hanohano awards in their native Hawai’i (2011 and 2014, including Group of the Year, two different Reggae Albums of the Year and Entertainer of the Year), and two #1 Billboard Reggae chart debuts, along with charting on the Billboard Top 200. Not bad for a band that was formed by six members of Hawai’i’s tight-knit music scene to record a few songs and have some fun. The Green was one of the first Hawaiian reggae bands to tour extensively on the mainland, as well as going further afield to New Zealand, Japan and other locales. Before becoming a headliner on their own, the band supported bands like Bruno Mars, Rebelution, Michael Franti, Iration, SOJA, and Damian Marley, as well as performed at acclaimed festivals including Vans Warped Tour, Wakarusa, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and California Roots Festival.

His latest, Trip, is his first since recovering from a serious accident in the summer of 2016 that left him with two broken arms and nerve damage in his right hand that prevented him from even holding a pick. David Liebman & Richie Beirach – Mezzrow Jazz Club
September 12, 2019 – New York
David Liebman (Tenor Sax), Richie Beirach (Piano) Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach have carved out a place in jazz history through their collaborations in several distinct settings: duo, the iconic fusion group of the ’70s, “Lookout Farm” followed in the ’80s with the critically acclaimed quartet “Quest.” Their musical telepathy is documented on several dozen recordings and years of performing together. Beginning with their mutual apprenticeships (most notably Lieb with Elvin Jones/ Miles Davis; Richie with Stan Getz/Chet Baker) along with their leadership of the musician’s collective “Free Life Communication” in the early ’70s that grew out of the New York City loft scene, their history is part of jazz folklore. Their influence as teachers, authors, composers and performers is acknowledged worldwide. This is especially heard in the harmonic realm where they developed a way of playing that reflected developments in 20th century classical composition alongside a unique approach towards playing the jazz standard repertoire. Most of all, their music, as sophisticated as it may be, is always heartfelt and passionate.

He fucking blows away the room at klezmer. The level of his virtuosity, deep knowledge, and deep emotion in his playing doesn’t ask, it demands an equal space for klezmer at the table of other so-called “folk” styles of music, such as bluegrass, zydeco, ranchera, or the blues.” – Geoff Berner, “Kosher Style” Liner Notes “There is no Coney Island ride, with the possibility of the Cyclone, that can deliver thrills on the level of Winograd’s clarinet.” – New York Music Daily “The Lebron James of Klezmer” – Jack Stratton, Vulfpeck

The Mike Stern/Bill Evans Band With Tom Kennedy and Steve Smith – Birdland Jazz Club
September 13, 2019 – New York
To a generation of contemporary jazz guitar aficionados, Mike Stern is regarded as one of the true guitar greats of his generation. A player of remarkable facility whose searing lines are informed mainly by bebop and the blues while also carrying a rock-tinged intensity, Stern made his mark with Miles Davis in the early ’80s before launching his solo career in 1985. Since then he has released 17 recordings as a leader, six of which were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards. His latest, Trip, is his first since recovering from a serious accident in the summer of 2016 that left him with two broken arms and nerve damage in his right hand that prevented him from even holding a pick. But Stern is back on top of his game, playing with typical authority and prodigious chops on this all-star outing, which features such longstanding colleagues as trumpeters Randy Brecker and Wallace Roney, saxophonists Bob Franceschini and Bill Evans (a bandmate of Mike’s in Miles Davis’ ‘comeback band’ of 1981), bassists Victor Wooten and Tom Kennedy and drummers Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers and Lenny White.

Mary Courtney – An Beal Bocht Café
September 13, 2019 – Bronx
Mary Courtney grew up in a musical family in the parish of Castlegregory, near the sea in County Kerry, a likely beginning for this remarkable singer and guitarist. Whether accompanying herself, or holding the rhythm line with her trad band, Morning Star, she is a consummate musician. Her music is an engaging collaboration of traditional Irish music and a progressive social conscience born of a political education in the United States. Her bodhrán (Irish hand-held drum) playing offers another dimension to her exceptional performance. Courtney has used her music to spread Irish culture and to educate her audience about the struggles of the Irish people. From rock ‘n’ roll to the ethereal strains of some ancient Celtic bard, Mary can sing anything, and sing it unforgettably.
