Jarien Jamanila Quartet Late Show – Cafe Bohemia
January 24, 2020 – New York

I like to write melodies that I think will be memorable, and I like to write in a swing style. When I hear Charlie Parker, Johnny Hodges, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, I’d like to have my own voice in that style of writing. I try to write more, but I like to write when it comes naturally. I prefer when melodies or chord changes come to me without there being an assignment at school: I like to write with honesty. That’s not to say you can’t do that with school, but I find that I can’t force myself to be inspired if I’m told to write, because I like to write when it’s best for me. People say my style is a bit different, my melodies can be quirky. My friends would say that it’s genuine, it’s not unlike me to write in that way.” Jazz Speaks

Teddy Swims – The Mercury Lounge
January 25, 2020 – New York

Jaten Dimsdale, known by his moniker, Teddy Swims, is an American singer and songwriter from Atlanta, GA. Teddy grew up navigating different worlds: he was a football player, a musical theater student and the grandson of a Pentecostal pastor. Teddy was exposed to a wider variety of music than most “country boys”. In high school and over the next few years he was in several bands, genres ranging from 80’s hair metal, funk, modern metalcore, soul, and country alternative bands. These experiences make Teddy who he is as an artist. In March of 2019, Teddy went on his first US tour as a hip-hop artist with his best friend Addy Maxwell, which he describes as freeing experience, as he was able to continue to expand into uncharted territory. With this in mind, Teddy began to explore integrating the various genres he loved: metal, pop-punk, soul/funk, country, gospel, r&b, and show-tunes, into one genre that is Teddy Swims. Teddy is the accumulation of past projects. Swims stands for: someone who isn’t me sometimes, a reference to Teddy’s struggle to integrate the different parts of himself. For Teddy, the goal is to break barriers and bring people together. About the project, Teddy says, “… (read more)

Lester is a “musician’s musician” and the kind of piano player that jazz fans love to discover: a quietly brilliant mind that has been building his own unique voice and sound for decades, just barely outside the jazz spotlight. Based in Yonkers, New York, he’s a mostly unheralded name in jazz, having spent the past 30 years raising a family and teaching piano lessons in his hometown. But his history bears out some fascinating details. For one, he was mentored by the late piano virtuoso Sal Mosca, who himself was a longtime accompanist for the saxophonist Lee Konitz.
