Jurassic World: Battle at Big Rock: short film release, plot, cast and when Jurassic World 3 is out – iNews

Jurassic World has expanded its universe with the release of an eight-minute-long film, Battle at Big Rock, set one year after the events of Fallen Kingdom

Premiering yesterday (Sunday 15 September) on FX Network, the short film sees a family of four encounter dinosaurs on a camping trip in the Californian countryside.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new film.

What happens in the short film?

The action picks up where Fallen Kingdom left off, with dinosaurs having been set free, forcing humans to coexist with them.

Battle at Big Rock introduces two new dinosaurs to the franchise, the Allosaurus and the Nasutoceratops, neither of which have appeared in a Jurassic Park or Jurassic World movie before.

The film opens with a newscast reporting dinosaur sightings in California and then we see a family of four having dinner in a caravan at Big Rock National Park.

The family spot some Nasutoceratops wandering around their campfire and we hear the mother, Mariana (Natalie Martinez) say, “The ranger says to stay calm and wait for it to go away.”

Gracie (Melanie Hurd) points out that a recent incident the family heard about on the news was caused by carnivores and the dinosaurs outside are herbivores – with one just a baby.

This puts us at ease for a moment, but then a terrifying Allosaurus – similar to a T-Rex – appears on the grounds and tries to pick up the baby Nausutoceratops in its mouth.

The family attempt to stay quiet but when their baby starts crying, the Allosaurus attacks the caravan and knocks it over, causing carnage.

As the family come to amongst the rubble of the overturned caravan, they manage to stop the Allosaurus from eating their baby just in time.

The family are left shaken but alive as the Allosaurus retreats after being injured by Gracie’s crossbow, which she had borrowed from the next-door neighbour.

Battle at Big Rock features two new animatronic dinosaurs we’ve never seen before in Jurassic Park or Jurassic World – the Nasutoceratops (and baby) and the adult Allosaurus.

It follows an all new cast consisting of André Holland (Moonlight), Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome), Melody Hurd (Fatherhood) and Pierson Salvador.

The short film was written by Emily Carmichael and the cinematographer was Larry Fong.

It was directed by Colin Trevorrow, who brought the franchise back in 2015 with Jurassic World, the fourth installment in the series and the first since Jurassic Park 3 in 2001.

The music is by Jurassic newcomer Amie Doherty.

When is the next Jurassic World film out?

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was released in 2018 and the third film in the series, tentatively titled Jurassic World 3, is set for release in 2021.
