Youth services for essential workers

Kihei Youth Center will continue its free “Malama Summer 2020” youth services from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for priority ages 5 to 11 years old until Aug. 3.

Masks are mandatory for both staff and youth members. Daily temperature checks are mandatory for both staff and youth members and social distancing is enforced.

Priority services are for essential workers and/or parents/guardians returning to work.

No in-person registration will be allowed without an appointment. Parents/guardians must wear masks when bringing their child. After-school services will be announced at a later date, according to an announcement.

Black excellence theme of event

The organizers for the March for Change, Maya Marquez and Keisa Liu, will host another event called Celebrate Black Excellence from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The event will start in front of University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului. Demonstrators will be asked to sign-wave before marching to Keopuolani Park (near the Boys and Girls Club). Once at the park, an expo will be set up for Black-owned businesses. Speakers will also be there to share their stories through poetry and music.

Attendees are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.

“We’re hoping to use this event to bring our Black community together in celebration of our history, diversity, and excellence,” said Marquez.

Singalong part of AAUW meeting

The American Association of University Women will host Kihei musician Mike Fink-iewicz at its 10 a.m. virtual meeting Saturday. The agenda includes chat time, followed by a brief business session and a singalong via Zoom.

Originally from Chicago, Finkiewicz began playing music in 1967. He was influenced by Motown, the Beatles, and other rock and blues musicians. Before the pandemic shutdown, he performed regularly at Beach Bums in Maalaea and at Fleetwood’s in Lahaina.
