Monterey Jazz Festival announces epic first wave to lineup – The Mercury News

Monterey Jazz Festival has announced its first batch of headlining artists for the 63rd annual festival, which runs Sept. 25-27.

And it’s filled with some of truly amazing artists, including Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Side-Eye, George Benson, Buddy Guy, Miho Hazama and m_unit, Christian Sands, Lila Downs, Jamie Cullum and Redman-Mehldau-McBride-Blade: A MoodSwing Reunion.

More artists will be announced April 1.

Arena acts include artists include National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Fellowship recipients Hancock and Metheny, who will are performing on the festival’s opening night, Sept. 25.

Blues master Guy highlights Day Two, Sept. 26, along with Miho Hazama and an epic MoodSwing Reunion of saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade.

Artists set to take the arena stage on Day Three, Sept. 27, include Downs, Cullum and Benson, who also a NEA Jazz Master.

Other artists set to perform at the festival include Kandace Springs, Matthew Whitaker, Las Cafeteras and the Mimi Fox Organ Trio.

Single-day tickets go on sale April 10.

Prices have not been disclosed yet.

In all, the Festival will feature more than 100 performances from both well-known and emerging jazz artists, as well as educational events, conversations, films and exhibits on seven stages.

The event is held on the 20 acres of the Monterey County Fair & Event Center.
