The artist Lecrae is a rapper, singer and New York Times bestselling author whose uplifting new album, Restoration, documents the healing joy he’s found after years of struggling with childhood abuse, addiction and despair. It comes just ahead of his second book, due out in October, called I Am Restored: How I Lost My Religion but Found My Faith. On this week’s New Music Friday, we give Restoration a spin and talk about the inspiration Lecrae offers through his art and activism.

Also on the program: The Killers come storming back with a big, anthemic collection called Imploding the Mirage; the band Bright Eyes returns after a nearly decade-long break with another big swing they’re calling Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was; and the Miami country and Americana band The Mavericks, 30 years after releasing their debut album, have their first-ever entirely in Spanish — plus, the U.K. jazz wonder Nubya Garcia, the swampy, rock group L.A. Witch and more. Host of NPR’s AltLatino, Felix Contreras joins NPR Music contributor Stefanie Fernandez, Tom Huizenga, Radio Milwaukee’s Tarik Moody, WXPN’s John Morrison, Ann Powers and host Robin Hilton as they share their picks for the best new albums out on August 21.
