New Music Out This Week 9/18: Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Ace Frehley, Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, Joan Osborne, Fleetwood Mac
This upcoming Friday, Sept. 18 brings with it a handful of new music releases spanning multiple genres. Below is our curated list of Rock Cellar’s new music picks for Sept. 18, along with links to purchase (where applicable).
Yusuf/Cat Stevens — Tea for the Tillerman² (Click here to pre-order from our Rock Cellar Store)
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of his legendary 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman, Yusuf/Cat Stevens will reissue the album this week — but with a twist. The singer/songwriter rearranged the songs from the classic LP, injecting new life in the material to truly transform the album in celebration of its legacy.
“Father and Son,” for example, features new vocals from Yusuf paired with his own recorded vocals from a concert in 1970:
Ace Frehley — Origins Vol. 2 (Click here to pre-order from our Rock Cellar Store)
Ace Frehley is a student of rock and roll, a lifelong devotee of the genre — this week, “The Spaceman” will release another album of covers, Origins Vol. 2, re-imagining songs from up and down rock music history as only he can. It’s the follow-up to Origins Vol. 1, which came out in 2016.
The set finds Frehley tackling songs made famous by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Mountain, the Kinks, Cream, Deep Purple and more. Here’s his take on “Space Truckin’” by Deep Purple:
Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets — Live At The Roundhouse Album/Film (Click here to pre-order from our Rock Cellar Store)
Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets was launched in recent years as an avenue for the legendary drummer tour the world playing classics from the early days of Pink Floyd to rapturous crowds appreciative of a trip back through time.
In May 2019, the group — Mason, bassist Guy Pratt, guitarists Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet and Lee Harris from Ian Dury’s Blockheads and keyboardist Dom Beken — performed at London’s Roundhouse, and a live album was culled from that performance. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – Live At The Roundhouse was supposed to be released in mid-April, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed its street date back to this Friday.
Fleetwood Mac — Then Play On reissue (Click here to pre-order the CD and click here for the 2-LP set from our Rock Cellar Store).
Originally announced earlier this year, a special trip back in time to the early days of Fleetwood Mac is coming on Sept. 18 when Then Play On, the band’s 1969 album, is reissued.
Then Play On marked the end of an era for Fleetwood Mac. The 1969 album — the first with guitarist/vocalist Danny Kirwan — was the third release from the band, but was the final album with co-founder Peter Green and predates the Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham era of the band by six years.
The album is noteworthy for featuring “Oh Well,” which became the first Fleetwood Mac single to land on the Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 55.
Per a news release, “this deluxe, expanded bookpack edition of the album will feature the original UK tracklisting, plus four bonus tracks; all mastered at half speed for dynamic range, and with the vinyl 2 LP version being pressed on 180g audiophile black vinyl.”
Joan Osborne — Trouble and Strife (Click here to pre-order a copy from our Rock Cellar Store)
Trouble and Strife is the twelfth studio album from Joan Osborne, who broke out in 1995 with Relish and its hit single, “One of Us.”
It’s also Osborne’s first release since 2017’s Songs of Bob Dylan, and was previewed in recent weeks with “Take It Any way I Can Get It”:
