Rock ‘n’ roll concert raises about $80,000 for epilepsy research, respite care
MADISON, Wis. – Nearly $80,000 will be donated to epilepsy research and respite care from funds raised at a concert Friday night.
After dad Michael Gomoll lost his son to epilepsy in 2010, he started the organization Joey’s Song, which raises money to donate to Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy, as well as Gio’s Garden.
Gomoll said he wants to help further research because he doesn’t want any other family to go through a loss of a child like he did. He said he hopes Joey’s Song can do just that.
“I couldn’t help the next family if I just looked inward,” Gomoll said. “At Joey’s Song, we talk about helping the next family.”
Friday night at the Barrymore Theatre in Atwood, Gomoll furthered his goal by hosting a sold-out rock ‘n’ roll concert.
Gomoll said Joey’s Song is also meant to create a network of people going through similar issues related to epilepsy. He said it can be a lonely experience without a network of people who are going through similar challenges.
“It can feel really lonely, especially when a child is first diagnosed because…your future kind of feels like it goes away,” Gomoll said.
The concert is streaming online till about 11:30 p.m. Friday. It can be viewed on Joey’s Song’s Facebook page, which also has more information about the organization.
