The jukebox musical “Rock of Ages” plans to have a permanent home in downtown Nashville.
Producer Matthew Weaver is seeking out a spot near Lower Broadway for “Rock of Ages at The Bourbon Room in Nashville,” according to a news release.
The 15,000 square-foot space would include a bar, lounge, “nightlife venue” and, most crucially, a 250-seat theater that hosts regular performances of “Rock of Ages.”
The Tony-winning musical – set in the Los Angeles rock scene of the 1980s and featuring the music of Journey, Poison, Pat Benatar and more – debuted in 2005 and soon made its way to Broadway. Tom Cruise starred in a 2012 film adaptation.
In December, “Rock of Ages” tested a new “immersive” production in Los Angeles, in a venue that recreated the musical’s fictional “Bourbon Room” club. The Nashville location looks to expand on that idea, with a cast of characters interacting with guests before the show and interactive elements placed throughout the lounge.
The theater’s adjoining venue plans to offer a full-service menu with “upscale comfort and bar food, craft cocktails and fine wine,” and guests won’t have to have a ticket to “Rock of Ages” to visit.
A spokesperson tells The Tennessean they’d like to open “by spring 2021.”
