Is it an rhythm and blues band? Is it a soul band? Is it a funk band? No, it’s Sailor Mouth.
The Lafayette band is a melting pot of R&B, soul, funk, blues and rock with big goals in 2020, including another album, more touring and bigger venues. Sailor Mouth is a band that aims to leave it all out there at every performance. Their shows already have high energy and its only set to increase next year.
The Times of Acadiana caught up with Sailor Mouth drummer and singer Gino Vallecillo to look at the past and see into the future.
1. How did you guys come up with the band name?
This group was originally supposed to be a dirty blues band. The name comes from that old phrase “mouth like a sailor” referring to someone who uses fowl language regularly … I grew up with older parents so, I heard this phrase pretty frequently through the years. It stuck and I thought it would be a band name people would remember.
2. What are you most proud of with the band?
Our live show. We pride ourselves on being a tight band and giving people an experience that they can resonate with. I always feel like the music is a stepping stone to get you to come see us in person and our performance is how we keep you invested. If you want to get a real feel for the band, come see us live.
3. Do you prefer road gigs or hometown shows?
I don’t think that we could honestly choose between the two. We love being from this city and playing for our hometown crowd, but playing out of town or state shows is always so much fun. We’re definitely pushing to do more out of town dates in 2020 though!
4. What’s the biggest challenge about writing a record?
Getting the ball rolling. I feel like it’s always a slow start with writing, because we spend a large amount of time jamming and discussing parts, but we’re great at taking little ideas and developing them until they become full fledged songs. Nothing good comes easy. It’s all just part of the process.
5. What are you most looking forward to in the future of the band?
We believe that the future is bright for the band. We’ve done some really dope things this year, but it’s all just the beginning. 2020 will bring a new record, bigger shows, more touring, and the continuation of the evolution of our sound. We seriously can’t wait to show people what we’ve been cooking up. Get familiar, because we certainly plan to be making lots of noise in 2020.
