Starcrawler pool together all the best of metal and rock-nostalgia on kerosene-soaked new album Devour Me – Grimy Goods

Leaning into their audaciously feral tendencies on their new record Devour Me, Los Angeles rock-outfit Starcrawler continues to crystallize that rabid spirit made so critical to their live shows by bringing into the studio with them. With an already notorious reputation for dishing out concerts that are as much a harrowing spectacle as they are high-octane rockers, their latest according to frontwoman Arrow de Wilde, “encapsulates all the blood, sweat, bruised knees, and broken fingers of a Starcrawler show.”

Wilde–known for being covered in blood, writhing on stage in a bejeweled jock-strap at their shows–is no stranger to that kind of wide-ranging intensity. Devour You finds a much more polished and sleek Starcrawler; one that relishes in their obvious tug-of-war of influences and somehow coalesces each into something that could only have been touched by these wild-eyed rockers.

Whether it’s thunderous, arena-ready rock sonics of “Bet My Brains”; a driving, throw-back piece of 80s rock nostalgia in “No More Pennies”; or the obvious metal provocations on “Rich Taste,” Starcrawler have no qualms in pushing their anxiousness, dire heartaches, and infectious rages into a variety soundscapes.

Wilde is the lightning rod at the center of each, her piercing wails and even soothing drone (“Born Asleep”) the perfect voice of rebellious angst and cutting melancholy. And between Wilde’s tireless switch-footing, breathy and exhausted–flailing in the spotlight over each track–and the band’s endlessly dynamic revisions of metal and rock, Devour You exists as a tour-de-force not only in their catalog but in the genre as a whole.

Starcrawler is on tour this fall and will be making a stop at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on November 9. Their new album Devour You is out now via Rough Trade, purchase it here. Visit Starcrawler’s website, Instagram, Facebook to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.
